Altergy Introduces New Eco-Friendly Mobile Lighting System

FOLSOM, California – October 15, 2009 – Altergy Systems has joined with Sandia National Laboratories and manufacturers Multiquip, Luxim, Lumenworks, and Stray Light in developing and introducing a new fuel cell powered mobile lighting system for the commercial market.

The first system was successfully demonstrated at the recent American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) meeting in Palm Desert, CA.

The new high intensity plasma lighting system utilizes Altergy's 5kW Freedom Power™ hydrogen fuel cells to power the lights. Each self-contained unit has the ability to illuminate an area approximately the size of a football field, and has a projected continuous run time of 40 plus hours. The numerous high intensity plasma lights are adjustable for various lighting needs and have a burn time of approximately 50,000 hours. The entire compact mobile lighting system is housed in a custom designed Multiquip light trailer.

Immediate commercial markets for the new fuel cell powered mobile lighting system include highway construction, aviation, motion picture lighting, indoor warehouse lighting, and more.

This new system answers the growing demand for a clean, reliable, and safe mobile lighting platform.

The vast majority of mobile lighting units today are powered by diesel fuel generators. These diesel powered lighting systems are not environmentally friendly, and their noise creates a safety hazard for construction workers. Injuries and fatalities can occur when construction workers are unable to hear oncoming traffic due to the volume of noise pollution produced by the diesel systems.

The new Freedom Power™ mobile lighting system is both environmentally friendly and "whisper" quiet. Unlike the diesel generators, the new fuel cell lighting system is also zero-emission expelling none of the CO2, NOx, and soot associated with diesel. Each mobile light unit can also reduce CO2 emissions by about nine metric tons per year if the hydrogen used is generated from non-fossil-fuel sources.
