Fuel Cell Engineer

General Requirements

Function as an integral member of a product and process team for the development, manufacture, sales, marketing, distribution and service of Altergy's fuel cell products.  Emphasis is on the simultaneous design of product and the manufacturing processes required to build them. Experience or familiarity with product and process engineering functions to create mass produced, high quality, low cost products and services, including product design and analysis, manufacturing process design and analysis, process control, production and automation equipment design, fabrication, and use, producibility, integrated product quality, product testing, sustaining engineering, and materials management, is highly desired, as are CAD, Solid Modeling and CAE Analysis skills/experience.

Working knowledge of World Class Manufacturing processes and techniques, Operations Excellence practices, Continuous Product and Process Improvement, variability reduction techniques, Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DFMA), Demand Flow Manufacturing (DFT or TPS) and integrated operating systems is helpful. 

Demonstrated ability to work in a team environment and utilize progressive people skills, as well as compliance with all company policies, procedures, and directives, existing and future, is required.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Design and develop fuel cell stacks to meet performance, cost and durability requirements for specific applications
  • Simultaneously design fuel cell products in the manufacturing processes required to fabricate them
  • Specify/develop balance of plant components and work closely with suppliers to improve and/or reduce component cost
  • Optimize operating conditions to minimize parasitic power loss and maximize fuel efficiency, while reducing overall cost of the fuel cell module
  • Work closely with balance of team to integrate fuel cell power modules into fuel cell systems, including power conditioning, control electronics, control algorithms, and integration with fuel reformers
  • Ensure successful transition of new product designs to manufacturing through documentation, 6-Sigma methodology, and hands-on involvement with the production team

Qualifications

  • Master's degree in an engineering discipline, with at least 10 years experience in successful fuel cell development and evaluation, or similar experience
  • Knowledge and understanding of materials and their properties used in fuel cell technology with experience in sourcing and selecting instrumentation and balance of plant components
  • Previous experience with successful design of bipolar plates for PEM fuel cells, including experience with modeling and analyzing two phase flow
  • Competence in mechanical design, including use of CAD solid modeling 
  • A solid team-player, capable of communicating concepts clearly and concisely in written and verbal form
  • Proven track record meeting milestones
  • Experience with 6-Sigma or other product development methodology
  • Experience in successful development of high volume products would be an additional asset
